VW Family Farm: I Think I Just Solved The Canning Lid Shortage!!
Harvesting a garden and canning it is a lot of hard work, and it is not something to take lightly when it comes to the health of your family and the space in your pantry. Knowing where your food came from and knowing that it is safe in jars that you canned yourself is definitely a popular concept and one that is often studied and organized well before diving headfirst into it. In this video, the VW Family Farm explains their homesteading traditions before giving a wonderful tutorial of how to can those goods from the garden. She also reads through the directions of Harvest Guard Reusable Canning Lids with you to help better understand each step along the way.
Have Harvest Guard Lids Been Tested For Safety?
We’ve been asked numerous times “have reusable canning lids been tested by the National Center For Home Food Preservation” and the answer is YES.
Below is the link to a 121 page thesis outlining the extensive study done on metal, plastic, and glass lids in 2014 at the University of Georgia (UGA). Our CEO was the person responsible for encouraging this study be done, while he was the co-owner of S&S Innovations at the time.
Before anyone replies, “but has YOUR brand been tested”, please understand NCHFP does not test every single product on the market. It took several years for our CEO to convince the Director of UGA to allocate funding and resources to this one test.
That being said, the exact lid design manufactured and sold by Harvest Guard Reusable Canning Lids is the one used in the tests conducted by NCHFP.

This leads to the next question people often ask – “How are these different from the ones manufactured and sold by your competitor?” The answer is, Harvest Guard Reusable Canning Lids are the same as the first-generation lids previously manufactured by S&S Innovations, for which a patent was never issued. The changes made by our competitor to create the EZ Seal lid design are minor, but enough to qualify for a design patent, which does not retroactively apply to our design. Additionally, their new design is not the one tested by NCHFP, as referred to in the link above.
Canning tips to a recent customer
We recently received an email from a customer, having a bit of difficulty with pressure canned chicken broth, and we felt it would be good to share with everyone the thoughts we shared with her. Below is the question and our response.
Customer question…
I had bought a large amount of your lids. Back in the winter. The first of the week is the first time I was able to use them. I put up 16 pints of chicken bone broth. Two days later 2 un sealed. Nothing wrong with jars. The day before I put up 14quarts of pinto beans. The next day 2 unsealed. I have been checking them everyday. This morning I found another jar that came unsealed. I also noticed that I lost about a inch of water out of jars. I have never had that happen before. And id did not happen with the broth. Hope you can give me some pounters on this problem. I can everything. |
